If you are in a working position in your church likely you have some form of yearly review process. Whether you sit down with your board or your immediate supervisor you will get graded in some way shape or form. In some contexts this can be a real pain, others its just sitting down for a quick lunch. No matter what you do, it is a needed step.
But, my question is what review process do you do of your ministry and yourself?
If you are like me you are probably biased one way or the other. Either you think you are doing an exceptional job or you are constantly critiquing yourself. So I think it is healthy to get an outside perspective, but not from your supervisor(s).
This year I decided to ask those close to me what they thought of my ministry. Some where helpful and gave me direct criticism while others sugar coated the whole thing. So I decided to take it to another level: Asking the parents of my ministry.
Now in some ways this is a big risk: I have parents who can be super critical and others who I am pretty sure send everything right to their junk mail. But I put it out there to see their review of our ministry.
  • Here are some questions I asked them:
  • What was your students favorite moment of this last year?
  • What topics would you like to see covered in the 2013 teaching calendar?
  • Are there ways in which we could improve communication with you as parents?
  • Can you think of anyone you think would be a good addition to our ministry team?
So far with the questions I asked I have heard roughly what I thought I would hear back. The nice thing about this system is it gives you a good perspective. It is like grading in the Olympics throw out the best and worst review and you will likely find common ground in the middle.

2. Give feedback
As a leader, your constructive feedback is vital to an individual feeling valued. Most followers are desperate for validation and they want to be recognized for their contribution. They’ll follow, work and give their heart if they feel like they’re following someone who cares enough about them to give them feedback about their contribution. When you take the time to give specific feedback (even if it’s occasional negative/constructive), you are adding to their personal sense of value. It’s not unusual for a person to work for, serve, volunteer years of service and not get any specific and personal feedback from their “boss”…it’s not unusual, but it’s definitely tragic.

3. Affirm, affirm, affirm
This should go without saying, and unfortunately, many times it does. I know leaders will say, “He knows he’s important to me.” Really? When was the last time you told him? It ought to be often! This is such a basic principle that it’s almost embarrassing to write, but I find it so rare in leaders that it’s worth mentioning and repeating.


Soul Surfer

Last night, my friend and I got a chance to see an early screening of Soul Surfer. And since I love Bethany Hamilton’s story, I was excited to see it on the big screen.

  • My small groups girls will love it…and yours will too. It’s a great TRUE story of a GIRL who overcomes a major trauma. I had the chance to meet Bethany a few years back at our Student Leadership Conference (SLC) and she’s the real deal. She loves Jesus and wants to bring glory to his name. I am certain that my girls (and your girls) will be inspired. I am certain that boys will like it too.
  • I was mostly impressed with the movie. There were a few parts I felt myself squirm because…let’s be honest, their budget was not the same budget as Lord of the Rings. And well, Carrie Underwood is a really good singer. But seriously, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt were pretty amazing. I loved a lot of the family moments in the movie.

The movie will be in theatres everywhere on April 8th- Definitley consider taking your girls to see it. I am certain they will enjoy it. And I promise it will lead to some interesting conversations!
