Weekend Teaching Series:  I Am __________ (week 2 of 3)
Sermon in a Sentence: The gap between what we say we believe and our actions is called hypocrisy.

Service Length: 68 minutes

Understandable Message: This weekend we covered hypocrisy in the church. I challenged students to be open and honest in their life groups, as well as to not be afraid of shining light on their past, their “real” them and the dark crevasses in their hearts. Honesty and hypocrisy cannot co-exist. Near the end of the talk I asked students to anonymously share their confessions on a response card, then we had our student greeters  collect them all up, go through them quick (to remove blank or inappropriate ones) and then at the end of the message redistributed them randomly back to the audience. We had a time of prayer at the end for people’s confessions, as well as a reminder that someone was also praying for you. Really proud of our students being honest and participating in this experiential part of the talk.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: We played a couple of fun new videos – one was the 2nd episode of HSM’s Sports Minute featuring local school sports updates and the other was a little animation on what a typical girls small group night looks like. Both played super well and I’ll post them both later this week! We also did a “get to know you” moment with one of our weekend leaders that was fun, too.

Music Playlist: Take it All, God Above All, For I Am Yours, From the Inside Out, Christ in Me

Favorite Moment: The song choices after the message this weekend were absolutely perfect. I really felt like the message continued right into the 3 songs – super powerful ending to the message!

Up next: I Am _____________ (week 3 of 3)

Weekend Teaching Series: Before and After: a study through Ephesians (series finale, week 3 of 3)
Sermon in a Sentence: A celebration of summer camp decisions framed around the whole armor of God.
Service Length:
89 minutes

Understandable Message: The week after camp might be my favorite youth group of the year. Everyone is there and everyone is on fire! All 4 high school services this weekend were a total joy to be at – hearing all that God did in the hearts of our students was absolutely incredible. Made me so thankful to be in youth ministry and honored to serve with an incredible team. I opened up the message by reading through Ephesians 6 and the whole armor of God. Then I asked them for testimonies on each of the parts of the armor of God:

  • Helmet of Salvation: testimonies or trusting Christ, baptism, etc.
  • Shield of Faith: stories of spiritual growth, etc
  • Shoes of Peace: testimonies of forgiveness, restoration, reconciliation
  • Body Armor of Righteousness: stories of turning away from sin
  • Belt of Truth: share a truth or confess a lie you’ve been living or believing
  • Sword of the Spirit: share a verse that has been meaningful to you this summer

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: This weekend we played the HSM Summer Camp highlight video and made a couple of callbacks to awesome videos from camp. The Amp Up Song, Krispy Kreme (Haters Wanna Be Me) and The Other Direction all made appearances. Such a fun, overpowering weekend!

Music Playlist: Here for you, What Would I Have Done, All I Am Christ in Me, We Are The Free

Favorite Moment: For sure hearing students stories. So, so strong.

Up next: Worship Together Weekend #2

Weekend Teaching Series: Before and After: a study through Ephesians (series premiere, week 1 of 3)
Sermon in a Sentence: The person that I used to be and the person I am in Christ.
Service Length:
66 minutes

Understandable Message: This weekend AC taught for the first time in HSM – he walked students through Ephesians 2 and how we were before Christ and the life-change that happens at salvation. He did a great job explaining sin, the traps of Satan and salvation by God’s grace. The highlight of the weekend was when he had a student come up and share the story of her life, including a recent departure from God’s path that cost her things she could never get back. Her story clearly illustrated the amazing grace of God and how

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: This weekend was really straightforward with lots of welcoming students, a fun recap of our recent Rwanda mission trip and our 80′s skate night from this past Friday.

Music Playlist: Somebody That I Used to Know (A capella cover), Here For You, Majesty, What Would I Have Done, Savior of the World

Favorite Moment: Cayla sharing her story was incredible – made the whole message come to life. Incredible testimony to God’s grace!

Up next: Before and After (week 2 of 3)

Weekend Teaching Series: Stories Weekend (1-off)
Series in a sentence: Testimonies of life change.
Service Length: 70 minutes

Understandable Message: This weekend was ran by AC (yoacblog.com) as our pastoral care guy. He gathered up 4 students and one of our staff for a powerful weekend of sharing their testimonies of how God has moved in their lives. Alyssa (junior) shared how she grew up in the church but it wasn’t until this year that moved her to move forward in Him. Ian (senior) shared about how he was bullied and kicked out of sumer camp for fighting and how sports and girls were his main priority until he met Jesus. Catherine (senior) talked about how her relationship with Christ far out ways any romanic relationship or abusive relationship, that God is bigger than any of them. Paula (senior) talked about how coming to this country from Argentina and growing up in a pastor’s family and how when God calls us to do something we need to do it no matter what out of love and obedience. And Dillon (our graphics guy at HSM) shared about his family life and how when he met God, God gave him all these new passions and abilities that he didn’t know he had that could be used to bring God glory. Very diverse stories with tons of different take aways.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Being that is was a pretty serious weekend with students telling their life stories there was no games or funny videos, but the atmosphere after they shared was very open and friendly. We played a reflective song (Your Beloved) between the half the testimonies to have the student sit back and reflect on the words and how God is moving in their lives.

Music Play List: We Can Change the World, Divine and Holy, Your Beloved, What Would I Have Done, The Stand, Tear Down the Walls, God Above All

Up Next: Worship Together Weekend

(post written by Justin Knowles, I was on a student mission trip to Rwanda)

This past weekend we did a message on SHAPE and hosted a ministry fair – as we were looking at the service at the last minute we needed a little filler video before the message. We quickly found this one and it was absolutely perfect! it is called It’s Time to Serve from Worship House Media – love, love, love it!

JG

Weekend Teaching Series: SHAPE + Ministry Fair (1-off)
Sermon in a Sentence: The saved serve.
Service Length:
42 minutes

Understandable Message: This week my friend Jessica and I shared the stage to teach a short message on SHAPE (Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences) and pointed students toward a ministry fair happening right outside the youth room immediately following the service. I love doing these this time of year – it gives us a chance to nudge freshman right into a place to serve and encourage all students to get involved in the church, serving and loving others.

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: This week we kicked off promotion for our summer calendar and pushed hard for summer camp as we head toward sold-out status. Short service, but lots of energy!

Music Playlist: We Are the Free, Beautiful Things, All I Am

Favorite Moment: I LOVE that everyone in our church that has a ministry had a table set up – we had a ton of serve opportunities within HSM and a ton outside. Students had so many choices – love seeing them sign up and get involved today! I’ll do my best to get some pictures up here on the blog later this week, too.

Up next: STORIES (1-off)

Weekend Teaching Series: Workshop Weekend (1-off)
Sermon in a Sentence: 4 different options for messages – choose your own message weekend!

Service Length: 39 minutes + 40 minute workshop

Understandable Message: This weekend we had the first 1/3 of our service together then for the message divided up into 4 different workshops. We tried to have a good cross-section of topics, here they are:

  • COPYCAT: What does it actually mean to be a Christian?
  • SPIRITUAL WARFARE: Putting on the whole armor of God
  • THE CHRISTIAN CONDITION: Lukewarm living
  • UNPLUGGED: When you feel disconnected from God

Each of them was really great – I got chance to bounce around to all of them and it was super fun to hear different voices teaching biblical truth. Each speaker had a handout and was well-prepared for their message. All in all a total success!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: Chip Bragg (one of our key volunteers) kicked things off with a great welcome and greeting time, in honor of prom [3 of our biggest schools all had them this weekend] he came out in his tuxedo and wowed us all. So fun! We also welcomed our summer interns and had a little fun with them on stage as well.

Music Playlist: Rise and Sing, The Earth is Yours, Forever Reign

Favorite Moment: We did a Rwanda mission trip commissioning at the 6:30 service and it was really special. Loved seeing the students who have given so much time, money and energy to go on this trip be prayed over by their peers, parents and HSM team. Such a great time!

Up next: Senior Weekend (1-off)

Weekend Teaching Series: XXX (series finale, week 2 of 2)
Sermon in a Sentence: How to be a good neighbor.

Service Length: 84 minutes

Understandable Message: This weekend Craig Gross, founder of XXXChurch, spoke to our high school students in all 4 weekend services. Last week he hit the topic of pronography strong, this week he took the series on the next step – how to I share my freedom and faith in Christ with my friends. His main passage was the Good Samaritan and told stories of how he has seen God work in his life and ministry. Really powerful!

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: This weekend we played Facebook Hack, which was a total riot. If you’re not familiar with it yet, steal this idea now (hit the link for the full scoop and graphics). Basically, we use an iPad and the contestant logs in and then gives control of their Facebook to the host. The host asks questions, and if the contenstant gets it wrong the host can unfriend whoever or post whatever they want. Hilarious! As an added bonus as the game was coming to a close, the contestant at one of the services took out a piece of paper and had written a poem to his girlfriend and asked her to prom with him. It made for a super memorable ending!

Music Playlist: We Could Change the World, Our God, Love Came Down, All I Am, To the Ends of the Earth,

Favorite Moment: My favorite moment was definitely the message and having Craig here to speak. I also loved having my friend Chris Wohlers back in HSM this weekend as a guest host to Facebook Hack. Chris was on the high school team last year but took a great opportunity with our adult service video team.
