Ideas for Lent – part 1

 —  March 16, 2011 — Leave a comment

I’m pulling some ideas for Lent out of a vault I’ve built up over theyears of creating worship and lessons. Today’s is part 1 of 2 parts of a theme called, “Renovate!”

The 40 days of Lent began late? this year with Ash Wednesday on March 9th.? As the days lengthen, our thoughts turn to the coming spring and the newness it brings. It’s a time of renewing, restoring, refreshing and renovating. “RENOVATE: Jesus Makes New” (taken from the 2007 Group Workcamp evening program theme) can make a powerful worship concept for your church’s Lenten season. Here is a list of several creative ways to flesh out the “Renovate” theme in your services:

? 1)? ? ? Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW Creation….”

? 2)? ? ? Setting the Scene: Renovation involves re-building so “build” a visual message throughout the 7 weeks. Each week, add something new to the setting: ladders, 2×4′s, tools, saw horses, etc. Make it look like the Carpenter’s Shop. By Good Friday, transform the setting into three crosses (and perhaps a coffin, a modern day version of the shroud and tomb?) with the tools off to the side but still in the scene.? Remove the two side crosses and tools for Easter Sunday and use the center cross to decorate with flowers.

? 3)? ? ? Media Enhancements: Go to Workcamps.com, click on “store” and then “program downloads.” Group has several media enhancements available which would be great for this theme:

  1. “Christ’s Love” – A music video of classic pictures of Jesus combined with scripture readings and set to soothing music.
  2. “John 3:16″ – An extremely moving fictional video depicting a couple’s agonizing decision to sacrifice their son to save the entire world. The BEST clip I’ve ever seen to describe the sacrifice of God the Father.?

Come back tomorrow or Friday for part 2.
