Would You Wear This?

 —  December 6, 2013 — 4 Comments

Imagine this picture was a pin…

or a t-shirt…

or a hat.

i-love-my-churchWould you honestly wear it?

Why? Why not?

And… does it matter if you love your church?

  1. No, I wouldn’t wear it.

I think we are called to love THE Church, not just MY church.

I know what the pin is getting at though. A few years ago, I got a pin from a friend that read “Jesus, save me from your followers.” Sometimes I feel like that about church (in general…not just mine).

    • I agree with the idea that we must love the universal Church of Jesus Christ, but the New Testament is also very clear about loyalty, allegiance, and deep affection for a local gathering of believers called the church. I would definitely wear that pin!

I like what David Platt says, when he argues against the old line “I love Jesus, but I hate the church.” That’s equivalent to saying to someone “I love you man, but I hate your wife.” or even “I really love you, but I can’t stand your body.” I don’t think Jesus is pleased when we talk like this!

Holly, thanks for your honesty. Maybe it’s just semantics, or maybe those semantics are important. I’m a big believer in the power of language… you’re right that we do need to be careful of how it comes across, but hopefully that doesn’t keep us from loving it even in an imperfect form.
