Volunteers and the Web

My buddy Gerry forwarded this article link to a story about a teacher posting some pictures on the internet that got her in some real trouble. While the situation at churches is somewhat different it still serves as a cautionary tale to both staff and volunteers. From time to time people will ask me if we look at our volunteers websites/blogs/MySpace on occassion – and the short answer is yes, and what we find matters. But the final straw for the school came when they saw that Snyder’s MySpace account–which she had mentioned to students on several occasions–contained a photo of the grog-swilling Snyder in a pirate hat, captioned “drunken pirate,” as well as posts alluding to her fraught relationship with her supervisor. They called Snyder at home and told her to walk the plank out of their student teaching program.
