POLL: Youth Workers and Porn

 —  January 9, 2012 — 6 Comments

I realize that this poll is a little jarring to be hit with on a Monday morning … but I would love your anonymous honesty. Youth workers – are you looking at porn?

  1. Nice punch between the eyes first thing on a Monday morning. Thanks. Your knuckles must hurt, Josh, for everyone you hit today.

The title of the poll completely jarred me, and I instantly thought of the Victoria’s Secret catalog I “innocently” thumbed through. You know, to see what might look nice on my wife. Whatever. How about that Shape magazine in the bathroom, or the Cosmopolitan at the dentist that was the only magazine within reaching distance?

Pornography is so much more than that XXX site your filter hasn’t picked up on yet. It’s everywhere we look, and it drives us to look, and to keep looking. I feel filthy, and so unworthy. Yet thanks be to God for His indescribeable gift, for grace and reconcilliation! Today is a new day.

Shameless plug…sorry Josh. I interviewed Craig Gross and just posted the interview today on YouTube. http://youtu.be/7JuNjlNqOiA It is about XXXChurch.com and Pornography.

  3. I wonder if the poll about listening to non-christian music correlates with this poll about pornography. Once we open ourselves up to fiery darts in small things it is easier to open them up in big things. This poll saddens me for the state of His church.

  4. Not trying to come across as a crazy fundamentalist and/or judgmental jerk face. I’ve thought about my comments long and hard. I say these things knowing full well of the planks in my own eye and in need of the mercy and grace of Christ daily.

    Why?

That’s the question I have for this. Why are student pastors looking at porn? Why are student pastors hiding sin? Why are they doing while they should be planning and looking into what God has for His students? Why?

God has called us to life that is pleasing to Him. Come on friends. Let’s get pure so we can stand before students and speak Truth to them boldly. Let’s get pure in Christ’s sight so we can call students to the same standard. Let’s get with it!

Again…I know we’re human but we have to get with it!

    • Why is simple.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”

Obviously student pastors shouldn’t be looking at porn. They shouldn’t be committing adultery. They shouldn’t be gluttons. They shouldn’t be lazy. They shouldn’t be prideful.

This question why is silly. Sin doesn’t discriminate based on profession. I hope that no youth pastor is naive enough to think it is ok to look at porn. If they do then there is a bigger problem.

It is not ok but posts and polls like this shows the necessity of accountability, internet filters and a time to sit down with the Lord and spend sometime in confession and repentance.

  5. Wow, I hope some of the commentors have more helpful suggestions for their students than they have for other youthworkers here. Telling someone to get pure who is struggling to get pure does not help at all.

Thanks to Robbie for the XXXChurch link, this might really help. From my personal experience, I’d also suggest to find some other youth pastor to regularly pray together and confess your sins to each other. Memorizing bible verses about adultry is also a good idea. Don’t give up the fight. And don’t forget who is famous for accusing christians in the bible.
