POLL: Why Do You Buy?

 —  September 6, 2012 — 3 Comments

Quick survey today to satisfy my curiosity – what influences you most when you buy youth ministry resources? There are so many great resources from so many different authors/organizations – was wondering what influenced you the most – vote for a couple!

  1. I think for me it’s a combination of brand and author; I’ve gotten to the point where I know I consistently like resources from Simply Youth Ministry and Youth Specialties, so I almost exclusively buy from them. I’ve started grabbing resources at Download Youth Ministry, but that goes back to the author thing – the authors at DYM are the ones that set the bar high at Simply back in the day, so I don’t feel like I’m taking a chance on buying the materials.

Ultimately, I think the brand/author loyalty, if I’m really honest, boils down to something even more basic – I know the people at YS, SYM, DYM … I enjoy being around them, I resonate with their styles of ministry, so I’m biased to their materials. Having the personal connection has probably been the biggest influence.

  2. Content. If my favorite author puts together some material that’s put out by my favorite publisher and packaged in all the right ways… if it’s not covering stuff that my students need, why would I buy it?

Content trumps all of these for me.

  3. Content is obviously the most important aspect. That’s also why I never buy anything that I can’t sample first. If there’s no table of contents and at least one sample lesson that I can look through I don’t even consider it. Downloadable is important too since getting things shipped to Canada through some organizations can be a real headache.
