POLL: Gender Breakdown of Youth Group

 —  August 15, 2011 — 5 Comments

My wife and I were talking this week about the number of girls in our ministry – we are probably at 60:40 girls to guys right now. Brought up an interesting question for this week’s poll (vote above): what is the gender breakdown of your student ministry?

Maybe an even better question to get you thinking beyond that is this: How do you attract the lagging gender? Any great ideas?

  1. I’ve always had a lot more guys than girls in my ministry.. But then again, my ministry is about 80% to the skateboard culture.. And not many girls skate…we just did a big comp a few weeks back, and of the 150 competitors, 2 of them were girls!!!
I’d love for there to be more girls… Pray for it all the time.. It’s actually why I’ve had to branch out into other things (the other 20%) of my ministry is things like youth group, gym night, bible studies.. We get a good even split of guys/girls at something like a bible study

For quite a few years at my current church, we would only have one, maybe two girls and a pile of guys. The biggest hurdle we had to overcome was that because there weren’t many girls, the girls who did come out, ended up bailing to other groups, and THEN when a new girl came out, she would bail because there weren’t any girls there. It was a horrible cycle. To make matters worse, it was the CHRISTIAN girls who would bail, and often it would be a girl from the community who would come out only to stick out like a sore thumb and never return. Thankfully, the problem resolved itself after a number of Jr. High girls graduated to our youth program and were committed to being a part of it–almost overnight we had a 500% girl increase!

  3. For the last few years, we have been slightly more girls, but our incoming group of 33 this year was 22 guys and 11 girls and we lost 14 girls and 10 boys, so we have swung back to slightly more boys.

  4. Additional comment – we have large group for 6th and 7th graders on Sunday morning when their parents bring them – our 1st service at 9 AM is usually 3:2 girls to boys and our 2nd service at 11 AM is 3:2 boys to girls.

  5. I’m curious to know the ratio of the family attending the church, as well, or possibly serving in the church? My attendance seems to be more girls than guys, however, when I look at church, and those heavily serving, I see their mom’s (or most female) as leaders in the church. I had an event the other night where parent’s were encouraged to attend, where we would be praying for their children before going back to school. Not only did I not have many parents show up, but the ones that did (2 exceptions) were all moms.
