GUEST POST: How to Have a Conversation About Porn with a Student

 —  January 28, 2012 — 3 Comments

You have a porn problem in your youth group whether you know it or not. High school, junior high, college–it’s present at every age. No longer do students have to go looking for porn, because in today’s age, porn comes looking for them. It might not be an easy topic for most students to talk about, and you may need to find a different way to communicate with students in your group, but it’s a topic that needs to be discussed.

Over the past couple months, we have both taken a week to meet with our junior high and high school small groups to discuss God’s view of porn, how to avoid and battle the temptation, and open the door to conversation. Here are some things we did right, and also some things that we learned from:

  1. And I would add: make sure moms & dads know this conversation is coming – and make sure the pastoral leader (youth pastor, senior pastor, etc.) is aware that the topic is being talked about…..

  2. @Darren I think the above would depend on the setting. If it is to the general youth group then yes of course inform the parents about it. If it is in a small group setting though as long as the parents were informed from the beginning that the group was for accountability and growing in their relationship with Christ then I do not believe that it would be necessary to personally communicate to the parents about this topic.

As for the post, great job! I really enjoy it when you cover tough subjects.

  3. Darren, that’s a great point. I sent out an email to the parents of my small group guys a few weeks before I planned to give this talk. I told them what we planned on talking about and gave them an “out.” I encouraged everyone to be there, but told parents they could keep their kids at home if they didn’t feel comfortable with the topic.

I also made sure to build it up a bit starting a few weeks out so parents knew how necessary the topic of porn is. Statistics, resources, etc.
