Album Review: tobyMac’s Eye On It

 —  August 30, 2012 — 10 Comments

Got a chance to listen to the new tobyMac album this past week (full disclosure: EMI sent it free for me to review) – Eye On It landed on iTunes a couple days ago and I’m pretty sure my kids already have the whole thing memorized. I grew up on DC Talk way back in the day (isn’t it about time for a reunion tour or something?) and as always tobyMac delivers some catchy pop-candy tunes and a little dubstep for good measure.

Best tracks on the new album:

Forgiveness (featuring Lecrae) – Great song and great message about making mistakes and forgiveness. Love it, sure to be one of the most popular on the whole album.

Mac Daddy – A hilarious song about a kid trying to get his dad to buy him a MacBook. Fun, catchy song. Easily my personal favorite.

Me Without You – this is the first single from Eye On It, getting tons of play on Christian radio right now. Not sure if it is about his wife (like the later track Made For Me) or if it was about God. They both work for interpretations and is a great crossover song.

Steal My Show – a great song about God taking over a concert and His Spirit showing up. Great thoughts in here about less of us, more of Him. I like this one a lot, reminds me of my place on stage.

All in all … a great album to recommend to your students with a couple of great tunes that should immediately go in your pre-youth group playlist. Good stuff!

  1. DC Talk reunion caught my eye…a bunch of youth ministries should contribute to a KickStarter campaign for this. :)

  2. Steal My Show!!! But love all of the songs:)

  3. You don’t have to be a “youth” to dig this album. I’m 39 and I thoroughly enjoy it on my own, and kids have nothing to do with it (I don’t have any). I just unabashedly enjoy tobyMac’s music. The “Jesus Freak” album back in the 90s transformed my appreciation of music and broadened my horizons considerably. And I was even past youth group age back then! ;)

  4. Love tobymac’s new album. “Me Without You” is definitely about God. Toby has done interviews saying as much but you can also tell from listening to the words: “You had me at Believe”, “Your everlasting arms”, “You saved me, remade me”. I love the catchy tune :) “Made for Me” is an adorable song though!

  5. TobyMac’s new album is Mind Blowing!!! Love your review Josh and totally agree with it, and yes, we totally need a DC Talk reunion.

My question is, now that TruDog got a Mac from his daddy, will he be coming out with his own album soon?

  6. My favorite is Made for me that he wrote for his wife! I think that is so sweet and she is super blessed to have a guy like that! I got to meet him yesterday (in an interesting way…lol) and he is a great guy! Been listening to him and going to concerts since DC Talk, it was my dream to finally meet him!!!!

  7. love the whole cd, haven’t put anything else in the player!!!
great beats and lyrics- so evident that you have stayed true to your Lord.
and usually Tru Dog has the 8th song, changed to 11th on this cd.
can’t wait to see you all again in concert- how about Indy sometime soon and bring Tru.

  8. Check out Tenth Avenue North if you like tobyMac. It’s pretty awesome! Here’s the video for “Losing.” http://bit.ly/RoXstn
